Warning: Your doctor is lazy, lying, and looking out for himself (or herself.)
This week has been an incredibly busy one. So many people have been in contact to show their support to Lauren and her family. I personally would like to thank all of the people who have responded to blogs, newspapers, and Lauren's website. I would especially like to thank everyone internationally. Your support, prayers, and well wishes have been very appreciated.
I have spent the remainder of the week reaching out to people on-line. Thankfully, it has started to work the way I intended. People are outraged and spreading the word. This has been unjust for Lauren and her family, and surely this can and will happen again.
Everyday a family is convinced by doctors that their loved one is gone and never coming back. They are told that they will never wake up and if they do they will be a vegetable. Better to "pull the plug" now then to draw out everyone's pain and suffering. This can happen as soon as a day after an accident. Right away they want a decision. If the decision is made that they do not want to hear, they are not supportive, and often times ridicule families for it. One day! Families are not informed about any therapy or treatments that may be beneficial, so they obviously aren't offered. I don't know if this is due to health insurance or liability or just plain laziness. Maybe a little of all three. They certainly can't be unaware of all the advances with brain injuries. If they are, maybe they should not be practicing.
Taking all of this information in, in addition to the fact that courts can determine whether a person will live or die based on hearsay... Hearsay that is questionable and most certainly not "clear and convincing." I have lost count of how many times I have said, what does "like that," mean? That cannot possibly be reason enough to take someone off a feeding tube. This should be a situation that has everyone outraged. This could happen to anyone. Anyone could be in court next week fighting the same battle. I certainly hope that this fact alone will help people to continue to spread the word. This is not a pro-choice issue, it is a disability issue. People born with disabilities that prevent them from feeding themselves are not subject to this treatment. Why should Lauren or anyone else for that matter.
Things have been moving quickly. As a result there have been many additions to Lauren's website www.lifeforlauren.org. This includes blogs and testimonials. Very soon there will be a petition available, if anyone is interested in getting signatures. If anybody has a testimonial or is aware of one, please feel free to contact me and let me know. The more information, the better!
Thanks,
VWarrior
